How to Make a Track in GarageBand

Creating music is like some magical work. At least that’s how we all music lovers feel. I believe you all magicians want to add sparkle in your work. Types of Tracks

GarageBand has tons of rhythmic patterns and audio features to choose from. You can create anything you wish to make. The New Track Dialog can create four types of tracks in general.

The MIDI track type. It is created by using MIDI instruments and keyboard recordings.

The Drummer tracks. The Drummer feature is a handy and versatile one, exclusively from GarageBand. It is basically used for quick and generic music creations.

The Audio, Guitar, and Bass track type is used for any music you want to create for any audio instruments.

The Audio, Line In, and Microphone type create tracks for people who want to make their own music. It’s the best option for the vocals.

Now that we have covered the options for creating tracks let’s begin with the process. We have divided the procedures in two. The first one is for Mac PCs and the second one for iOS.

Create a Track using GarageBand on Mac PC

GarageBand has made it really easy to create a music piece. However, before you start composing, make sure what type of track you want to create. The basic idea about the instruments will give a certain advantage. Also, you must download the sound library ASAP. It has lots of pre-packaged tracks and audios you can use for free.

Here are the steps you need to follow to start making music.

Step 1

You have to begin by creating a new project.

  • Open GarageBand and click on “New Project.” Select “Empty Projects” and click on “Choose.”
  • Select the option “Software Project Option.” Now click on “Create.”

Step 2

You must add the instrumentals to your song. First, you need to add a New Track from the “Track” option. Choose “Software Instrument” and click on “Create.” Choose the instrument you want to add from the “Library” and bring up the “Show Musical Typing” option. Click on the “Record” button, play your notes and click back on “Record” again. Continue to do this until the instrumental is over.

Step 3

Loop management is excellent in GarageBand. There are pre-installed versions of tracks you can add to your project. To add a loop,

  • Click on the loop-shaped icon at the upper-right corner.
  • Choose the loop you want to use. You can preview the loop by clicking on it first.
  • Drag and drop the loop in the main project window.
  • You can extend or cut short the loop, depending on your need.

Step 4

This is the main part. You have to insert vocals for your project. Select the microphone audio option to create a microphone track. Make sure your USB microphone is connected to your PC. Once the audio track is added, record your vocal over the instrumental music you just created. Sing your heart out! To record vocals,

  • Click on “Track” and choose “New Track.”Select the microphone audio option and click on “Create.”
  • Click on the “Record” button to start to record your vocals.
  • Once you’re done, click again on the “Record” button to end the recording.

Tip: Record multiple versions of the vocals to layer them according to your need.

Step 5

This is the final part. Listen to the entire recording. Click on the “Play” button and play your track. Make changes if necessary, and if you’re satisfied with the end result, proceed to export your project.

  • Click on “Share.”
  • Choose “Export to Disk.”
  • Rename the file.
  • Click on “Export.”

Create a Track using GarageBand using iPhone & iPad

The GarageBand on iOS is quite handy. You will have all the features that are available on the PC version. Let’s have a look at how you can create a track on the iOS edition of GarageBand.

Import or Create Document

Yes, document! The iOS version has named the “PROJECT”as “DOCUMENT.”After launching the GarageBand app, click on the CREATE DOCUMENT option. On the left side, you’ll see several options to import your existing project.

Explore the Initial Option

The New Project window will show you two options. LIVE LOOPS and TRACKS. The LIVE LOOPS option allows you to play pre-recorded tracks available in the library and create a whole new combination track. However, if you want to create something unique, you must choose TRACKS.

Select Your Instruments

You’ll have tons of options to select for your instruments: guitars, Keyboards, Strings, Drummers, and lots more. The suitable one for a manual approach would be the DRUMS option. There is the infamous DRUMMER percussion as well. It’s a great choice too.

Adjust the Beat

Once you’ve settled your instrument’s pattern, click on the red RECORD button to lay down your first track. Once the track starts playing, you can adjust the beat and rhythm by moving the grid’s icons.

Smart Bass

Go to the PROJECT page and select a new instrument. Choose smart bass, and you’ll see a new control panel. Find the columns donating the chords with letters at the top. There’s an AUTOPLAY option, or you can play the riffs by yourself.

Lay your Track

Once you’re satisfied with your tune, bass, and beat, it’s time to lay down your track. Press the RECORD button and get started. Sing to your heart’s content along with the funky tune you just created. Made a mistake? No worries! Just stop the track, rewind it, and start all over again. Simple!

Corrections

GarageBand has a dedicated editor in case you want to make changes to your riffs. You can add sequences to your track and more instruments if you want. So, for correction,

  1. Go to the Project Page.
  2. Double-click on the specific riff you want to make changes to.
  3. Select EDIT.
  4. Drag Horizontally to adjust the duration and vertically to change the notation.
  5. Click and drag the PEN icon on at the upper left corner to edit and add new notes.

Balance the Volumes

There will be several tracks in your project. You have to adjust their volumes to make it sound right. Go to the Project page and drag the instrument column out. You’ll now have the volume sliders for each of the tracks you have laid down. Balance them until you’re completely satisfied.
